German "Engineering"

I *finally* got my dad to help fix the Beetle today :) It needed two "quick" things. The accelerater cable snapped (again!) and an exchast gasket burned out...quick stuff right :-/

So we get out there, get everything set up, jack the car up, and get the muffler off...no problems. Where the gasket burned out, one of the studs that holds the muffler on is snapped and rusted off (later i found out that it was like that last time we had to do something in that area but we mutually decided to leave it alone) So my dad fought for a good ...maybe 20 minutes?...trying to get that piece of screw out. Finally, after much "There is no way in hell we are dropping that motor *AGAIN* (a lot of stuff we've had to fix so far has involved dropping the motor out of the car)...in the end...we dropped the motor...and still (with the extra space to try and loosen the stud) we couldn't get it out after trying everything in our arsenel. So it was off to Autozone (in the dreaded 91 Ford F150...i have to drive it when the bug is being fixed...it's too big, i like the quick and small beetle much better! (don't get me wrong, the Truck is still cool...just not my preference) So we decide on a $20 "easy-out" kit made of "hardened and heat treated steel" and head home to try it out....it snapped maybe five minutes into the attempt...so we drilled and drilled for who knows who long trying to if nothing else, get the "hardened and heat treated steel" out of the hole and make a hole that the new stud could turn itself into...all the while dad is of course (as usual) cursing what i have come to call "German Engineering", saying that he has never had such trouble on any other car...RIIIIGHT....wait til we have to work on the truck...

The Beetle runs again though! and the heat works again....hooked that up in the dark becuase i casually brought it up and so it *must be done now!* :-/

Goodnight :)
